Albeit we are not a Semantic Web type application, we do solve many complex data integration problems that greatly benefit from our semantic metadata abstraction.

Regards,
MichaelMichael Waclawiczekhttp://www.expressor-software.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1819317151376439456.post-69561710868005041432009-06-10T23:27:50.080-07:002009-06-10T23:27:50.080-07:00A very appreciable blog.I read it, it is really in...A very appreciable blog.I read it, it is really influenced me. I am agree with your thoughts.I appreciate the concern which is been rose. The things need to be sorted out because it’s not about the individual but it can be with everyone. There are so many differentiators for me, many of which are not highlighted in the blog, but in essence you are spot on. It is very difficult for many people to see the difference between RDMS tables and ontologies, but they are so far apart (to me). To me the RDF data is self describing (see Dean Allemang's blog, which I agree with). It is also not fixed in it's design, so it allows you splice and dice the data how you want even if a relationship doesn't currently exist. So that leads to inferencing or just the ability to add new relationships through sparql constructs etc. I'm a great fan of these. I view the ontology as the face that you want to put on the data allowing you to make it what you want but also mixing it with a face that someone else has defined as well. That's cool. I partly mentioned this in example 3 when I merged the company data.
I won't let this turn into a blog in it's own right, but one of the mistakes I made in the beginning was to look at the technology stack around all of this and assumed that it was the top (OWL) that I needed to concentrate on. This was a mistake drawn from working with other technologies. This made life tough in understanding what the semantic web was really about, but once I got passed this and realised it was the rdf at the bottom of stack that was most important for my work and how key the URI was to this, life became really simply. (well simpler). I've seen other people struggle like this, but i hope I've been able to pass on my experiences so they haven't had to suffer as I did. The key for me to understanding the complexities of the semantic web was to understand and embrace it's simplicity. Does that make sense?
Cheers
PhilPhil Ashworthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13009361769060088831noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1819317151376439456.post-1222797727260041642008-12-04T22:03:00.000-08:002008-12-04T22:03:00.000-08:00This is terrific stuff, Phil.Based on your experie...This is terrific stuff, Phil.

Based on your experience here, what are the key differentiators for RDF and friends? I see a few things highlighted in what you've done:

1) URIs as identifiers. (Though the real key seems to be the deterministic nature of Inchikeys?)

2) Flexible graph model for adding arbitrary properties to a unique identifier.

3) Inferencing for classification.

Is that a fair characterization?

LeeLhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07411022833232537618noreply@blogger.com
